Background
Methanol is the simplest alcohol and can be referred to as wood alcohol due to the way it was historically produced (distillation of wood grains). Methanol occurs naturally in the environment through anaerobic bacterial fermentation. Today, methanol is being produced via multiple industrial chemical processes, the most common choice involving natural gas as a feedstock although coal and biomass are alternatives. Natural gas is reacted with steam to reformulate the molecular structure and generate methanol. Title 13, Sections 2292.1 and 2292.2 contain the fuel specifications for M100 & M85 fuel methanol, effective on January 1, 1993.
